Bi Won

We already knew about the place! We didn’t hear about it from Metro. However we hadn’t been here before because they were just closing as we arrived last time. But today we rocked up at 7:30 and were shown to our table at the side of the restaurant.

The restaurant isn’t very homely or even that nice inside (there was a rubbish bin just sitting by the counter), but we weren’t here for looks, we were here for the food. We sat down and ordered galbi beef, marinated pork, and a soy beef soup to wash it down.

Not long after we ordered the waitress brought over hot, flaming coals! This must be one of the only Korean BBQ restaurants in Auckland to use coals instead of gas.

An introduction was given of how to use the cooker which was very helpful. A knob which controlled a fan underneath the coal was used to affect the flame height.

The side dishes came out and we were told we could get refills. Nice.

Atmosphere

We were thoroughly impressed with the use of coal, and the food was so delicious that the atmosphere felt better simply from those things.

Both the ladies and gents bathroom had facilities for those disabled which was great to see. A lot of the restaurants do not.

The music was playing Korean jams so that’s always a big plus in our books.

The eftpos machine had a couple of hiccups but not a worry. We yelled thank you very loudly for the kitchen to hear and once we were out the door the man ran out after us. He cried out that we should have free ice cream and that we should go back and choose.

We did.

It was lovely. Red Beaned flavoured.

Bonus point for that encounter.

Food

The meat was delightful, marinated wonderfully. We don’t wanna boast too much, but our BBQ skills are pretty tops.

Side dishes were fantastic and our plates seemed more colourful that ever.

The soup went down a treat and served as a great accompaniment to the meat.
