Mandang

Last week I Dan down Wellesley Street, when he noticed a sign for a Korean restaurant called ‘Madang’.

He thought nothing of if and then… WAIT! He haven’t seen this place before.

How exciting, Auckland has a new Korean restaurant. The first time we went to check it out it was closed, but today we found it was open.

We walked into the small yet busy front of the restaurant, where the staff quickly cleared a table for us to sit at and brought us menus.

Atmosphere

The waiter was very friendly, and asked if we wanted to be walked through the menu which was very helpful. We had never tried pollack before and he happily explained that it was a fish. We therefore ordered the pollack soup, a first for us.

As we look around we see there is a back room where further tables are laid out. The decor is nice and clean and the the service was very prompt and friendly.

The restaurant was full of diners

Food

Including the pollack soup, we ordered grilled short rib meat patties which are a little different to the usual Korean offering. These meat patties were wonderful.

Anna also requested additional spicy sauce and was presently surprised when she received proper gochujang. We also ordered kimchi fried rice, the Korean food lover’s staple. In all the food was good, considering that we ordered things which were slightly different than usual, it’ll be interesting to go back and order our traditional favourites to see how it stacks up. We both left feeling full and satisfied, so we can’t complain about that.

Value for price

At $50 this was about what we would expect for a Korean meal for two, however if we had been able to order drinks it may have gotten quite expensive.

Overall rating

Keen to come back here to explore more of the menu. Looking forward to when they serve alcohol as well.
